HIVE - LEAVESDEN COUNTRY PARK

LEAVESDEN HIVE
Leavesden HIVE is regularly used by a number of groups including the Leavesden Hospital History Association, local U3A groups, uniformed bodies and visitors.

The HIVE, located opposite Woodlands Café and a one minute walk from the car park will foster and care for the beauty of the park and focus on sharing this with the community.  It is hoped that all visitors will leave the park with a greater knowledge of the importance and fascinating history of the Hospitals, Aerodrome and Film Studios.

Combining heritage and wildlife together, the Leavesden HIVE will be a pool of knowledge for park visitors to enjoy and will include interpretation boards, educational exhibits and artefacts from the rich heritage of Leavesden Country Park.

The Leavesden HIVE plays home to the Leavesden Hospital History Association, founded by Martin Brooks.  The Association provides an incredible insight to the legacy of the hospitals that once filled the grounds of the site and played such an important role in the treatment of mental health in the Leavesden community. Visit the Association's website to find out more about specific events which run from the HIVE throughout the year and include Heritage Walks, Open Days and more.

Please note: Leavesden HIVE is not open daily, but is available to hire for educational and heritage purposes throughout the year.

THE GARDEN

The Garden is a small, but beautiful shared space with Leavesden Hive and Woodlands Café. Its design includes features for all the senses: fresh herbs and flowers to smell, soft fruits to eat, a kaleidoscope of colour from the rainbow canopy and brilliant tactile totem pole carvings. A stunning central feature is a carved honeycomb surrounded in bees. The Garden has the largest of the Bug Hotels in the park and children are invited to come and see what’s crawling in the hotel – logs are nearby for you to roll over and discover a bug or two.

Two picnic tables are snugly placed so if you fancy a coffee from the nearby café you are welcome to sit and enjoy. The surfaces of the Garden are all weather – meaning that its an accessible place all times of the year and welcoming to wheelchairs and buggy’s. Higher level accessible flowerbeds enable wheelchair users to get up close to the flowerbeds too.
